MIDLAND, Texas (10/10/08) - The North Texas Women's Tennis team played in a lot of close matches on the first day of the Midland Racquet Club Invitational on Friday.
With some of the better teams around the country attending, North Texas had many tough battles throughout the day. Unfortunately, the Mean Green got the short end of the stick with more losses than wins. Overall, North Texas posted a 5-11 singles record and a 2-4 doubles record.
Of the 11 losses in singles, five of them were third set tiebreakers. The Mean Green did win one tiebreaker. The other singles matches involved several tight two set matches.
There were a couple of victories in particular for North Texas that caught the attention of many.
Narine Kazarova defeated Rickie Honiball of Miami (OH) in straight sets (6-4, 6-1). Miami (OH) is considered one of the better teams at the Invite.
In doubles, the team of Amy Joubert and Rachel Wilhelm beat one of Texas Tech's top teams of Simone Templeton and Kerryn Potgieter (8-2).
Mean Green assistant coach, Jeff Maren, summed up the team's performance.
"Coach Lama and I were pleased with the team's effort today," Maren said. "We were in a lot of tight matches. We put ourselves in position to win, but we couldn't close the deal on some of the matches. We are looking to improve our performance the rest of the weekend."
North Texas starts second day action from Midland on Saturday morning.
