DENTON, Texas (10/22/08) - The North Texas tennis team gets set to play in the ITA Southwest Regionals on Thursday, October 23 through Monday, October 27 in Ft. Worth on the campus of Texas Christian University. Twenty of the best teams in the country will be on hand including Baylor, LSU, Texas, and TCU.
At this week's media luncheon, North Texas head coach Sujay Lama discussed what he likes about his team going into the Regionals.
"I'm pleased with our results this fall especially at the Rice Classic," said Lama. "We've been motivated by playing tough opponents and shown that swagger on the court. This team has the heart to compete and play with confidence."
Besides North Texas, UL-Lafayette and UL-Monroe are the Sun Belt Conference teams playing at the Regionals.
The Mean Green has two direct entries in the main draw for singles, Irina Paraschiv and Madura Ranganathan. Both have strong fall records with Paraschiv at 8-2 and Ranganathan at 7-2. In doubles, the Mean Green has four teams in the main draw.
North Texas is riding a wave of momentum after its best tournament of the fall at the 2008 Holiday Inn Astrodome Rice Classic last weekend. The team won five titles overall (three singles and two doubles). In three days of action, the squad posted a singles record of 16-5 and a doubles record of 7-2.
