Kazarova, Doubles Teams Sharp On Opening Day Of Regionals

FORT WORTH, Texas (10/23/08) - The North Texas tennis team had solid outings from singles and doubles during the first day of the ITA Southwest Regionals in Fort Worth. Narine Kazarova won two qualifying matches and the doubles teams of Irina Paraschiv/Madura Ranganathan and Amy Joubert/Rachel Wilhelm each won their first round main draw matches.
Mean Green assistant coach Jeff Maren commented on the results from Thursday.
"The players took care of business today," Maren said. "We were pleased with the team especially Narine's performance in singles. Amy (Joubert) and Rachel (Wilhelm) looked good out there and you can tell they are clicking very well together. We are looking forward to the matches tomorrow."
Kazarova had two impressive straight set victories in her qualifier's draw. She defeated Itzel Manzanera of UT-Arlington (6-1, 6-2) and Emily Braid of Rice (6-1, 6-1). If Kazarova wins her final round match tomorrow, she will earn a spot in the main draw.
In doubles, the team of Paraschiv/Ranganathan defeated Houston's duo of Lucy Forward and Vicky Simpson in a 9-7 battle. The other Mean Green team of Joubert/Wilhelm beat Texas State's Lainy Chafitz and Nyssa Peele in dominant fashion (8-1).
Overall, North Texas went 8-6 on the day.
The action picks back up tomorrow morning from Fort Worth.
