Tennis Begins Midland Tourney On Friday

DENTON, Texas (10/8/08) - Mean Green tennis gets back on the court for the Midland Racquet Club Invitational this weekend on Friday, October 10 through Sunday, October 12. Teams from across the country are participating including: North Texas, Abilene Christian, Baylor, Boise State, Miami (FL), Miami (OH), Nebraska, Pepperdine, Rice, Texas A&M, UT-Arlington, UTEP, and Texas Tech.
Three of the teams competing finished the '07-08 season ranked in the ITA National Top 25. Pepperdine came in at No. 25, Miami (FL) at No. 12, and Baylor at No. 4.
Miami (FL) and Baylor both have singles and doubles players ranked in the Preseason ITA National Top 25.
Julia Cohen of Miami (FL) is ranked in singles at No. 25 and Lenka Broosova of Baylor is at No. 8. Broosova is also ranked in doubles at No. 18 with Csilla Borsanyi.
This tournament definitely features some of the toughest competition North Texas will face all year.
The Mean Green has shown success in the two tournaments its played during the fall. North Texas hosted the Mean Green Invite back on September 12-14 and played in the SFA Invite on September 26-27.
The team's overall record in singles is 31-15 and in doubles, 17-4.
North Texas head coach, Sujay Lama, talked about his team during a media luncheon on Tuesday.
"This weekend should show us where our team stands," Lama said. "It should be a competitive tournament. We are improving our fitness level and trying to develop that character and mental toughness we need. I am encouraged where we are and looking for this team to peak at the (ITA) Regionals."
