Day One Complete At North Texas Classic

DENTON, Texas (11/7/08) - The Mean Green tennis team delivered a nice all-around performance during day one of the North Texas Classic on Friday. For the day, North Texas won six of seven doubles matches and went 9-7 in singles.
The competiveness showed as Ohio State, Texas A&M, Tulsa, South Alabama, and UTEP were all on hand. Many spectators came out to cheer on their respective teams.
Mean Green assistant coach Jeff Maren shared his thoughts on Friday's matches.
"We were very pleased with the way we played today especially in doubles," said Maren. "The quality of play speaks highly of the teams involved. Our team was able to transfer the energy from court to court. We are finishing up the fall like we had hoped."
North Texas' top two doubles teams picked up good wins.
Irina Paraschiv and Madura Ranganathan defeated Erica Kristan and Katie Welch of fellow Sun Belt school South Alabama (8-3). The team of Amy Joubert/Rachel Wilhelm got wins against Texas A&M's Ashley Turpin/Stephanie Davidson (8-6) and Marina Deluca/Ximena Fuentes of UTEP (8-0).
There were two big singles victories as well.
Catalina Cruz defeated a talented player in Stephanie Davidson of Texas A&M in a three-set match (6-4, 5-7, 6-3). Irina Paraschiv beat UTEP's Martina Trierweiler in a three-set thriller under the lights (6-4, 4-6, 6-1).
Play continues on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. from the Waranch Tennis Complex in Denton.
