Mean Green Swimming Begins SBC Championships Today

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (2/28/08) The North Texas swimming and diving team will begin its quest for the its first ever conference title today in Nashville, Tenn.

Last season the Mean Green finished a school-best fourth with 467 points. Nicki Leslie will look to repeat her performance she had last season as a freshman, tallying a silver medal in the 100 free and a third place finish in the 4X400 medley relay.

Florida Atlantic will look to claim its third consecutive Sun Belt title. The Owls will depend heavily on senior Lauren Shue. Shue currently leads the Sun Belt Conference in the 200 freestyle, the 500 free, the 1000 Free and the 1650 freestyle. She also holds the SBC swimming championship records in the 200, 500 and 1650 freestyle.

The Mean Green won three of its last four dual meets to close out the 2007-08 regular season with a 4-8 dual meet record. Two of the three wins came earlier in the month when North Texas knocked off both Houston and TCU, two teams that the Mean Green had a combined 0-29 record against prior to recording the two wins.

North Texas continues to rank amongst some of the top mid-major swim programs in the country. The Mean Green are ranked No. 18 in the latest mid-major ranking produced by collegeswimming.com. North Texas has been ranked as high as No. 12 earlier this season. Three other Sun Belt teams are ranked in the poll; all three amongst the top 10. Denver sits at No. 4, while Western Kentucky comes in at No. 6 and Florida Atlantic rounds out the group at the No. 8 spot.

The three-day championships will be held at the Tracy Caulkins Aquatics Center in Nashville and will conclude Saturday.
