Mean Green Tennis Earns ITA All-Academic Honors

DENTON, Texas (8/11/08) For a second straight season, North Texas tennis had four players named scholar athletes as the team was recognized on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s All-Academic awards.
The Mean Green tennis squad was named an All-Academic Team after posting a 2007-08 GPA of 3.397, the highest among all sports at North Texas. Sophomores Amy Joubert and Shannon MacKenzie as well as seniors Rachel Wilhelm and Sammie Moreton were named ITA Scholar Athletes.
"I am extremely happy and proud of our team for receiving this outstanding honor,” said North Texas head coach Sujay Lama. “These young women have worked extremely hard in the classroom and on the courts and are very deserving of this recognition. This success would not be possible without the help of a fantastic academic team and our academic advisor, Tawa Dorsch."
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above. ITA Scholar-Athlete status is awarded to players that have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year.
North Texas was one of four Sun Belt Schools and one of 102 programs nationally to earn All-Academic Team honors. Just 499 players across the country were named ITA Scholar Athletes, including only 18 in the Sun Belt Conference.
Things are going well for North Texas tennis on the court as well. The Mean Green is coming off its best season since 1986-87, and posted a 13-9 record after a 2-19 campaign in 2007. The Mean squad received a No. 13 ranking in the Southwest Region, and sophomore Madura Ranganathan was tabbed as the region’s 30th ranked singles player.
NT opens the season with the Mean Green Invitational on Sept. 12 at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
