Successful Tennis Invite Comes To A Close

DENTON, Texas (9/14/08) - The 2008 Mean Green Tennis Invitational wrapped up play on Sunday at the Waranch Tennis Complex. The tournament showed how strong the North Texas tennis team will be in '08-09.
Including singles and doubles play, the Mean Green only lost three matches over the weekend. The team's singles record was 21-3 and doubles was 10-0.
North Texas assistant coach, Jeff Maren, shared his thoughts on the Invite.
"I thought it was an outstanding tournament," Maren said. "Our fitness level looked great and we worked hard. There was a good level of play out there and I'm excited about our team."
North Texas freshman standout, Irina-Alexandra Paraschiv, won her singles draw on Sunday defeating Katarina Michkova of UT-Arlington 6-0, 6-2 in the finals.
After winning all of her matches during the weekend, Paraschiv was excited about her performance.
"I was really happy," Paraschiv said. "My game was really good and I'm glad that I won my draw. I'm happy that the rest of the team did well and I am looking forward to next weekend."
After winning her semifinals match against Kristen Reid of SMU, North Texas sophomore, Madura Ranganathan, lost in the finals to Monika Hadvigerova of UT-Arlington 6-1, 6-0.
Mean Green sophomore, Narine Kazarova, won her consolation finals match 8-1 versus Annie Hang of Army.
The rest of the draws feature all North Texas players in the finals which will be played out in Tuesday's practice.
Senior Rachel Wilhelm will face sophomore Amy Joubert and sophomores Shannon MacKenzie and Ashley Akin will square off in singles action.
In doubles, the team of Joubert/Wilhelm will face the team of Paraschiv/Ranganathan. The other match will have Catalina Cruz and Shannon MacKenzie against Ashley Akin and Narine Kazarova.
The Mean Green are back in action next Friday as they travel to Houston to play in the Rice Invite.
