Weekly Notes and SFA Invite Draws
DENTON, Texas (9/24/08) - The North Texas Women's Tennis team go to Nacogdoches to play in the Stephen F. Austin Invitational this weekend. The action begins on Friday, September 26.
The Mean Green looks to continue its successful start to the fall season as the team competes against seven other schools, Stephen F. Austin, Lamar, UL-Monroe, Texas State, Sam Houston, Northwestern State, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
North Texas assistant coach, Jeff Maren, shared his thoughts on the SFA Invite at this week's media luncheon.
"Since the Rice Invite was postponed, we wanted an extra tournament to keep the momentum going," said Maren. "The players are doing what's expected of them and I like the encouragement I'm seeing in practice."
There will be six singles draws and three doubles draws this weekend.
In singles, Catalina Cruz faces Mariaryeni Gutierrez of Lamar, Amy Joubert plays Alexandra Valarezo of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and Narine Kazarova goes against Ana Burjaili of UL-Monroe.
Other singles matchups are Rachel Wilhelm facing Manami Kuroda of Lamar, Ashley Akin playing Christelle Kaempfer of Stephen F. Austin, and Shannon MacKenzie against Andreea Enica of Stephen F. Austin.
In doubles, the team of Rachel Wilhelm and Irina-Alexandra Paraschiv squares off against Kathrin Lange and Bianca Schulz of Northwestern State. The other matchup has Catalina Cruz and Amy Joubert playing Gabriela Gadeva and Tatiana Smolnikova of Stephen F. Austin.
The Mean Green are coming off a great overall performance in the Mean Green Invitational. The team posted a 21-3 singles record and went 10-0 in doubles in two days of match play.
