Mean Green Dominant In Opener At New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (1/17/09) - The North Texas tennis team opened its season with a bang defeating the New Orleans Privateers 7-0 on Saturday. The Mean Green won all six of its singles matches and every doubles match. This was North Texas' first ever victory over Sun Belt foe New Orleans.
"This was a good first match for us," said NT assistant coach Jeff Maren. "We were able to get the jitters out and now we are ready to play a tough Tulane team tomorrow."
The newest and one of the most talented players for the Mean Green, Paula Dinuta, played in her first match as a freshman on Saturday. The Romania native beat Kozue Matsumoto from the No. 3 position in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
Freshman Irina Paraschiv, also from Romania, won her singles match from the No. 2 spot against Casandra Escobar 6-1, 6-3. Playing at the No. 1 slot for the Mean Green was sophomore Madura Ranganathan who won against UNO's Kir Kemp in three sets 6-0, 4-6, 1-0.
Paraschiv and Ranganathan also teamed up in doubles to defeat Matsumoto and Escobar in a thrilling 9-8 match.
North Texas will take on a challenging Tulane squad tomorrow beginning at noon in New Orleans, LA.
