NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (1/18/09) - The Mean Green tennis team improved to 2-0 on the young season by defeating Tulane 5-2 on Sunday. North Texas won four of six singles matches including victories by Paula Dinuta and Narine Kazarova. The squad also won two out of three in doubles featuring a win by the team of Rachel Wilhelm and Amy Joubert.
"It's always nice to go on the road and pick up wins, especially two in a row to begin the season," said NT head coach Sujay Lama. "Now that we've got a couple of matches completed, we can see what to improve on. Overall, I'm proud of the way the players performed."
This match proved to be more challenging than the day before against New Orleans, but the Mean Green flexed its muscle and took care of business in its second straight road win to open up the season. This was NT's first victory over Tulane in the school's history evening the all-time record to 1-1. The Green Wave won the previous and only meeting back in the 1991-92 season.
Paula Dinuta of the Mean Green played from the No. 2 position on Sunday and beat Lindsay Dvorak in two sets 6-2, 7-5. Narine Kazarova also picked up a W against Caroline Gerber 6-2, 6-0. Amy Joubert and Rachel Wilhelm tallied singles victories as well.
Wilhelm and Joubert won their doubles match against Caroline Gerber and Jessica Lange 8-5. Narine Kazarova and Catalina Cruz did the same versus the Tulane team of Fonseca/Siegel 8-5.
North Texas tennis will be back in action beginning next Friday as the team travels to Lubbock, Texas to take on Texas Tech and Mississippi State.
