SAN ANTONIO, Texas (2/14/09) - The Mean Green tennis team did what it took to win 5-2 in a tustle at UT-San Antonio on Valentine's Day. The victory against the Roadrunners improved North Texas to 5-2 this season.
"We expected a hard match against UTSA," said Mean Green head coach Sujay Lama. "It was important for us to win the doubles point going into our singles matches. We are excited about the win and now we have to focus on the match with Texas State tomorrow."
North Texas won all three doubles matches to get the important point. The southwest region's eighth-ranked team of Irina Paraschiv and Madura Ranganathan defeated UTSA's Karen Scida and Micaela Silva 8-6. Catalina Cruz and Narine Kazarova beat Monika Drabkova and Caroline Dedering by a count of 8-5. Rachel Wilhelm and Amy Joubert won against Nathalie Wallin and Holly Phillips 8-3.
In singles, Amy Joubert had a three-set match which included her fighting off a match point and winning a tiebreaker 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.
"It was match that I had some extra motivation for because I had lost to her (Caroline Dedering) at the regionals," said Joubert. "I had to save a match point and really give it my all. Overall I thought the team did a great job and I liked how we stuck together out there."
The other victories in singles for North Texas included Paraschiv at the No. 1 position, Ranganathan at No. 3, and Catalina Cruz from No. 4. Paraschiv defeated Scida 7-6, 6-3 and Ranganathan was victorious versus Drabkova 7-5, 6-0. Cruz also came out on top against Micaela Silva 6-2, 7-6.
The Mean Green goes back to work tomorrow at noon against the Texas State Bobcats.
