DENTON, Texas - The North Texas men's basketball team has won 14 straight games against unranked opponents, and will look to make that 15 against in-state rival Texas State on Saturday. Tip off from Strahan Coliseum is slated for 4 p.m.
The Mean Green took down Rice on Tuesday, 68-65, for its eighth straight home win dating back to last season. Tristan Thompson was a big factor in that win, posting his third 25-plus point game in his last five outings. The senior's 26 points, combined with Kedrick Hogans' four block outing helped NT claw out the victory over the Owls.
Texas State trailed by as many as 31 points to Our Lady of the Lake, falling 127-126 in overtime on Wednesday night. The NAIA squad from San Antonio led by as many as 20 at the half, and hit a half-court buzzer-beater to knock off the Bobcats.
North Texas has faced Texas State on the hardwood more than any other opponent in school history. This will be the 86th meeting between the two schools, with the Mean Green holding a 57-28 edge in the series which began in 1921. North Texas was 31-13 against Southwest Texas State, as it was known then, prior to World War II. Since the 1987-88 season when the Bobcats joined the Southland Conference, NT is leading the series 11-9 overall, but is 4-5 in San Marcos.
Texas State was picked to finish third in the Southland Conference's West Division in the annual coaches poll. Forward Cameron Johnson was also named a First-Team All-Southland Conference selection.
