DENTON, Texas (2/16/10) - The North Texas swimming & diving team gets set to compete in the Sun Belt Conference Championships from Centennial Park SportsPlex in Nashville, Tenn., on Wednesday. The championships will last four days beginning Wednesday and running through Saturday.
The Mean Green (9-5) will enter the meet as the No. 12 team in the Mid-majors as ranked by CollegeSwimming.com/CSCAA and are coming off of a record season as a team, racking up the most dual wins in school history.
SBC Notes
"The team is really excited to get the championships underway this afternoon," head coach Joe Dykstra said. "They have worked so hard and accomplished so much this season already, and everyone in our program is excited to hopefully take another step up in the standings of the Sun Belt Conference, win a few events, and get some NCAA consideration times and scores. It should be a very exciting week here in Nashville!"
After a third place finish last season, North Texas will be trying to track down last year's champion, Western Kentucky (No. 10 amongst Mid-Majors) and Denver (No. 9 in Mid-Majors), who was last year's runner-up.
Sophomore diver Delia Covo will head into the diving portion of competition with the second highest score in the SBC this season from the three-meter board and the third highest from the one-meter spring board. She shattered the three-meter school record in a meet at No. 18 Arkansas totaling 258.38 before breaking her own school record at No. 6 Texas A&M with dives totaling 262.13.
Some of the major highlights of the 2009-10 campaign were defeating Rice for the first time in program history, taking down cross-town rival Texas Christian and defeating Houston. All three of those dual victories came in successive meets.
