Mean Green Softball Falls To OU, 6-4

Norman, Okla. (3/10/10) - Despite outhitting the 12th-ranked Oklahoma softball team, the Mean Green could not bring runners home in a 6-4 loss on Wednesday night at the OU Softball Complex.
North Texas falls to 7-8, while the 12th-ranked Sooners improve to 16-3 overall. North Texas is winless in the all-time series against OU.
The Mean Green had a rocky start, giving up an OU grand slam in the first inning, but settled down and cut into the OU lead the rest of the way. North Texas outhit the Sooners, 7-5, but left nine runners stranded on base.
Ashley Lail (2-3) took the loss for the Mean Green, giving up six runs off five hits in 3.2 innings of work. Jennifer Smith was effective in relief, holding the Sooners hitless over 2.1 innings.
North Texas scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning, cutting into the OU lead, 6-4. With runners on first and third, OU struck out the final batter to end the game.
Lindsey Vandever gave Oklahoma an early lead with a grand slam in the first inning. The Sooners loaded the bases off a walk and two singles.
Mariza Martinez responded in the third with a solo home run. The long ball was the junior's fourth of the season, which is second on the team.
North Texas cut into the Oklahoma lead with a run in the fourth. Rebecca Waters hit a single over the rightfielder's head, scoring Lisa Johnson from second. Johnson walked to start off the inning. The Mean Green left three runners stranded on base.
The Sooners extended its lead with two runs in the fourth with an RBI single and a bases-loaded walk. Smith relieved Lail with the bases loaded and forced a groundout to end the inning.
North Texas added two runs in the seventh and left runners on base. Mallory Cantler knocked in the first run with an RBI single. Lesley Hirsch drew a walk and scored from second on Cantler's single. Smith knocked in the second run with a sacrifice fly.
Johnson continued her hot hitting, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks.
