Mean Green Softball Splits Doubleheader With ULM

Monroe, La. (3/13/10) - Lisa Johnson hit her team-leading seventh home run of the season in the top of the eighth inning to give North Texas a 7-6 win against ULM on Saturday afternoon at the ULM Softball Complex. Kandace Causey pitched a no-hitter against the Mean Green in the second game of the day, defeating North Texas, 8-0.
The Mean Green extends its record to 8-9 overall, and starts the conference season with a 1-1 mark. ULM is now 8-10 and 1-1 in the Sun Belt.
North Texas played perfect defense the first game and took advantage of ULM's five errors en route to victory. In the second game, the Mean Green was hurt by five errors and was unable to post a hit against Causey.
ULM's Causey pitched six innings and allowed no runs and no hits in the nightcap. The ULM offense supported her with eight runs off 12 hits.
Ashley Lail picked up her third win of the season, allowing just one earned run in 6.1 innings of work. She pitched the first five innings and the last inning and a third. The senior struck out a season-high six batters.
In the first game, North Texas led, 6-1, heading into the bottom of the seventh, but ULM tied it with a grand slam. Johnson posted her first hit of the game in extra innings with a solo home run, which proved to be the gamewinner.
Renae Bromley started the scoring for the Mean Green in the fourth inning with a two-RBI single. She tied career highs with two hits and two RBI in the game. The junior knocked in the third run of the ballgame with an RBI single in the sixth. Lesley Hirsch scored the fourth run, scoring off a wild pitch in the same inning.
Mallory Cantler and Rebecca Waters added runs with solo home runs in the seventh inning, putting the Mean Green ahead, 6-1. It was Cantler's second long ball of the season and Water's fourth.
North Texas returns to action on Sunday, March 14 when it finishes the series against ULM at 12 p.m.
