Mean Green Softball Sweeps Centenary

Shreveport, La. (3/5/10) - Freshman Brittany Simmons picked up her first career win in the North Texas softball team's 5-0 victory against Centenary on Friday night. The Mean Green won the second game of the doubleheader, 5-2.
The Mean Green evened its record at 7-7, while Centenary falls to 4-9. North Texas leads the series against Centenary, 4-1.
Simmons improved to 1-3 in the circle with a shutout performance against Centenary. She pitched five innings, giving up just four hits. Jennifer Smith picked up the win in the second game after relieving Simmons. The junior pitched four innings and allowed just two hits. She struck out a season-high seven batters.
North Texas outhit the Ladies, 11-4, in the opening win. Six of NT's 11 hits were for extra bases.
Mallory Cantler went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the 5-0 win. The first baseman knocked in the first run with an RBI double. Mariza Martinez scored on the play after reaching base with her own double. Rebecca Waters and Amber Miller knocked in the rest of the runs with home runs. Waters hit a solo shot, while Miller posted a two-run homer.
Martinez gave North Texas a 1-0 lead in the second game with a solo shot in the third inning. After Centenary tied the game, 1-1, off a Mean Green error, North Texas scored two runs in the fifth to retake the lead. Lisa Johnson and Waters both knocked in runs with RBI singles.
Johnson went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. She added to the win with a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning. The home run was her team-leading sixth long ball of the season. Courtney Bradshaw capped the win with an RBI single.
