STARKVILLE, Miss. – In its last matchup against an SEC team, North Texas rolled to a 75-55 victory of LSU in Baton Rouge, La. On Sunday, the Mean Green will have its hands full if it wants to extend its SEC win streak to two when it visits No. 24 Mississippi State.
Mississippi State is off to a fast start at 6-1, which includes a 67-57 victory in the 2K Sports Classic title game over No. 15 Arizona. The Bulldogs also knocked off No. 18 Texas A&M in the semifinals after building an early 22-point lead. MSU never trailed in either of those two games, and knocked off back-to-back ranked opponents for the first time since 2004.
Forward Arnett Moultrie was named the 2K Sports Classic MVP, and leads the SEC in rebounding with 11.2 per game. The UTEP transfer is averaging 15.2 points per game, and has a team-high three double-doubles.
North Texas will counter with Chris Jones, who has assaulted the NT freshman scoring records just three games into his career. The Garland, Texas native tallied 31 points at Texas Tech - the fifth best freshman scoring performance in NT history - and followed it with 20 points at UT Arlington. At 18.3 points per game this year Jones ranks 7th in the nation in freshman scoring.
Kedrick Hogans, a Third Team Preseason All-SBC selection, racked up two blocks at UT Arlington to move him into third place in school history in career blocks. Career blocks No. 81 & 82 for Hogans passed Wendell Williams (81 from 1986-89), and he will now need 16 more to reach his former teammate Quincy Williams (98 from 2004-08) for second. Jeffrey Simpson (2004-06) still holds the school record of 119.
