Swimming Takes Third At Sun Belt Championships

ROCKWALL, Texas- Hosting the event for the first time, North Texas swimming & diving matched its best finish in the Sun Belt Swimming & Diving Championship, finishing third for the third straight year. Catia Weickgenant had four podium finishes and set school records in three events during the championship. Catherine Johnson finished second in both the one meter and three meter diving competitions, and set a new school record on the one-meter board while qualifying for the NCAA Zone Meet. North Texas score 677 points, the second-highest total in program history.
The first day of action in the meet saw North Texas set a school record in the 200 yard medley relay, with a time of 1:42.20, shattering the mark of 1:43.39 set at last year's Sun Belt Championships.Stephanie Bernier, Sarida Muslow, Rosa Gentile and Seabre Pope combined to set the new school mark, which finished third in the event behind Western Kentucky and Denver. The team made the NCAA 'B' cut, which makes them eligible for selection in the NCAA meet.
Catia Weickgenant, Angie Dworschack, Erika Roach and Hiliary Riedmann finished second for North Texas in the 800 yard freestyle relay, posting a time of 7:25.34, the third-best time in school history. Weickgenant broke the school record in the 200 yard freestyle leading off the relay, only to break that record later in the meet. North Texas finished 1-3-4-5 in the 500 yard freestyle, as Weickgenant set a new school record and made the NCAA 'B' cut with a time of 4:50.51. Angie Dworshack, Dawn Richerson and Erika Roach finished third through fifth.
On Thursday, North Texas jumped into the meet lead, as Rosa Gentile just missed lowering her school record in the 200 IM, as she finished sixth. Seabre Pope finished fourth in the 50 yard freestyle, with a time of 23.57, and Catherine Johnson took second in the 3-meter diving with a 258.20, with Delia Covo finishing right behind her with a 254.55 in third place. After the second day's action, North Texas was in the lead.
On Friday, Catia Weickgenant finished 3rd in the 200 yard freestyle relay, swimming a 1:49.46, which lowers her school record that she set earlier this meet leading off the 800 free relay. Weickgenant has had a torrid start to the conference championships, setting two school records, winning an individual event, and winning two more medals, one of which was in a relay.
Rosa Gentile finished fourth in the 100 yard buttefly finals with a time of 54.96, just barely getting out-touched for 3rd by one hundredth of a second and missing on second place by less than two-tenths of a second. North Texas now sits in third but has a strong event coming up in the 200 freestyle.
Hilary Riedmann won the 400 yard individual medley consolation with a time of 4:28.30, edging out Stephanie Martin of Western Kentucky by seven-tenths of a second. Reidmann just missed lowering her school record of 4:28.11 set earlier this year.
Sarida Muslow leads North Texas and finishes 6th in the 100 yard breaststroke. North Texas still sits in third, although the 200 yard freestyle has still not been scored.
North Texas finished fourth in the 400 yard medley relay, swimming the second-fastest time in school history at 3:48.43. Stephanie Bernier, Muslow, Gentile and Seabre Pope just missed tying the school record by nine-tenths of a second.
On Saturday, North Texas swept the podium on the 1650 freestyle, with Dawn Richerson winning the event with a time of 16:50.31, followed by Angie Dworschack in second and Hiliary Reidmann in third. Weickgenant continued her excellent championship, earning her fourth medal of the meet and breaking her third school record of the meet in the 200 yard butterfly. She swam a 2:01.72 in the finals, finishing in third place. North Texas went 1-3-4 in the 100 yard freestyle consolation finals, with Seabre Pope winning the heat with a 52.02.
Catherine Johnson finished second in the one-meter diving competition, setting a new school record and making the NCAA Zone Meet cut with a score of 279.35, just being edged out by Sabrina Beaupre of FIU, who scored a 279.90. North Texas just barely missed earning another podium finish in the last event of the meet, being beat out by FIU by .22 in the 400 yard freestyle relay.
