LIEPAJA, Latvia - Tony Mitchell was one rebound shy of a double-double as the U19 USA Basketball team pulled out a last-minute 80-78 win over Serbia on Friday.
Box Score
Tim Hardaway, Jr. (Michigan) hit the game-winning jumper with 48 seconds remaining to seal the US (2-0) win. Mitchell, one of four US players in double figures, piled up 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting to go with nine rebounds and two blocks in 16 minutes. Joe Jackson (Memphis) led the way with 19 points, while Patrick Young (Florida) had 13, and Mitchell and Hardaway both tallied 11.
Serbia (1-1) held the US to 1-of-13 shooting from 3-point, but a 39-26 edge on the glass helped the Americans stay within striking distance.
Serbia edged out the US's next opponent, China, (78-73) on Thursday. The Chinese also fell to Egypt (100-96) on Friday, which means the Americans can win Group D with a victory over China on Saturday.
In two games at the U19 World Championships, Mitchell has shot 7-of-12 (58.3 percent) from the floor for 18 points, 19 rebounds and six blocks - all in 29 minutes.
