Tennis Shoots Down Cardinals, 5-2

BEAUMONT, Texas - North Texas tennis won its season opening match against Lamar 5-2 on Saturday at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
The Mean Green (1-0) continued its winning ways in doubles in the season opener, taking all three matches in convincing fashion.
"It was a good start to the season and while we didn't play our best tennis, we all fought hard to get the job done," said senior Nadia Lee.
The No. 1 duo of Valentina Starkova and Barbora Vykydalova downed the Cardinals' (0-2) Salas and Mayagoitia 8-4 to clinch the doubles point after freshman Franziska Sprinkmeyer and Lee destroyed the tandom of Maso and Czudek 8-1.
Senior Irina Paraschiv, who missed almost all of the fall with an injured shoulder, was paired with freshman Kseniya Bardabush in the No. 3 doubles slot, defeating Lamar's Porte and Pennesi by a score of 8-4.
Singles saw Lee and Ilona Serchenko push the Mean Green lead to 3-0 as the both lost only two games in convincing victories at the No. 3 and No. 5 singles slots respectively.
The Cardinals were able to mount a comeback though, winning the No. 1 and No. 2 matches in singles and cutting the North Texas lead to 3-2.
Bardabush came through in the clutch in her first collegiate dual match though, clinching the match from the No. 4 slot with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Mayagoitia.
Vykydalova, who dropped the first set 6-4, would give the Mean Green the final victory of the day, shooting down Robert in a tiebreaking third set, 4-6, 6-4, 10-6.
North Texas will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon as it travels to take on the No. 25 Oklahoma Sooners. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. from the Headington Family Tennis Center.
