Tennis Comes Home Empty-Handed

HOUSTON, Texas (11/3/12) - Mean Green tennis wrapped up play at the Cougar Fall Open Sunday afternoon with a 7-9 singles record and a 3-4 doubles record from the John C. Hoff Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Houston.
"This was not our best weekend," head coach Sujay Lama said. "We were unable to close out matches time and again and that is something we need to improve on for the spring."
Freshmen Dané Joubert and Victoria Parshikova advanced to the third place matches of their draws. Unfortunately, those matches weren't played due to delays. Fellow freshman Emelia Box advanced to the finals match of the consolation round. Augustina Valenzuela had to withdrawal from the tournament after day one.
"On the bright side, our freshmen played their best tennis and showed marked improvement from when we started," Coach Lama added.
Joubert defeated Jessie Boda of Liberty University 6-1; 6-1 in the first round. Stephanie Nguyen of Rice defeated Joubert 6-2; 2-6; 10-3 to advance to the finals match.
Parshikova defeated Bérénice Van Den Bergh of Texas State 7-5; 6-1 to advance to the semifinals where she lost to Steffi Rath of Denver 6-7; 6-2; 10-8.
Monica Pieratt of Texas State defeated Box 6-3; 4-6; 10-7 in the first round. Box moved on to defeat Nicola Wellman of Liberty to advance to the consolation finals.
"Overall, we had an outstanding fall," Coach Lama said. "We have a lot of pieces and we are very excited to put it all together for the dual matches. The key is for us is to continue to grow and improve each day."
The Mean Green tennis returns to action Jan. 19-21 when it travels to Fort Meyers, Fla. for the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational.
