"We played great defense today," head coach Mike Petersen said. "We just missed too many free throws to be able to win the game."
Redshirt sophomore forward Eboniey Jeter led the way for the Mean Green, hitting six of eleven from the field and five free throws for 17 total points. Jeter also contributed one third (14) of the team's total rebounds (42), allowing for 13 second chance points for North Texas.
North Texas saw a glimmer of hope late in the game when UNC's leading guard D'Shara Strange fouled out with 1:52 to play. Strange led her team with 17 critical points and eight rebounds before exiting the game with the Bears ahead by eight.
With the Bears without their best performer, the Mean Green proceeded to cut the deficit to two possessions with just over a minute to play. In the end, North Texas was unable to overcome 15 missed free throws and 18-percent shooting from behind the arc, eventually conceding to UNC for a second consecutive narrow defeat.
