IRVING — North Texas junior defender Dominique James has been voted by the league's coaches as the 2018 Conference USA Player of the Year.
The Mean Green's captain led the team an outstanding defensive season, allowing just 13 goals in their 21 matches. James, who was also voted the 2018 C-USA C-USA Defensive Player of the Year, guided UNT to a regular season conference championship and tournament championship as well as the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in program history and the second year in a row. During the middle of the season, UNT earned a top 25 national ranking for the first time.
"This past year has been incredible for both the team and myself," James said. "I'm glad I could help lead my team to not one but two championships and become nationally ranked. I'm thankful for all of those that voted for me for this award and I can't wait to see what next year brings for North Texas soccer."
James is the first North Texas soccer player to win a conference player of the year award since Heather Hutyra in 2005 when UNT played in the Sun Belt Conference. James is the first in C-USA's history to earn the Player of the Year award as this is the inaugural year of the award.
North Texas earned three Sun Belt Player of the Year awards during its 13 years in the conference. Marilyn Marin won back-to-back Sun Belt Player of the Year awards in 2002 and 2003.
Along with being an outstanding soccer player, James is a two-time C-USA All-Academic honoree as she pursues her business degree.
