Swim And Dive Finishes Weekend Strong

In the final day of competition in its mid-season invitationals, North Texas swim and dive finished out a strong weekend of competition.
Â
Swim finished third in the Kansas Classic team standings behind winners and hosts Kansas University (1297) and Big-12 counterpart Iowa State (642). Sophomore Leigh Faires McGee had the highest individual finish in the afternoon finals. McGee came fourth in the 1650-Yard freestyle (16:58.93).
Â
McGee was named to the All-Invite team along with senior Brittany Thurstin. Both McGee and Thurstin were part of the 400-yard freestyle relay final team that placed fourth (3:26.36) along with junior Jowita Sienczyk and senior Emmabeth Jensen.
Â
"Brittany and Leigh Faires really stepped up in each of their four events and came through big for the team," head coach Brittany Roth said. "The team really came together each day of the meet. We were able to attack our races with each opportunity. Having a mid-season championship meet allows our team to rehearse the format for conference. Our team got better each day at racing in the prelim to put our team in scoring positions at night"
Â
The divers wrapped competition in Houston at the Phill Hansel Invitational with platform diving. Sophomore Meghan Miller placed the highest in both preliminaries and finals. Freshman Altaria Wallquist had the highest placing of her weekend with 7th in the prelims, finding the 8th spot in the finals (175.35.). All scores were season highs.Â
Â
Senior Averie Ruiz scored a 171.45 in the B-Final after placing 10th in the prelims.
"The divers did well throughout the weekend," diving coach Mark Murdock said. "Altaira had an outstanding day making her first final as a freshman. The team is starting to come together when competing. Each one wants to do their best which encourages the others to keep the energy rolling."
Â
North Texas returns to action on Nov. 28-Dec. 1 in Greensboro, NC at the USA Swimming Winter Nationals. Â
