SURPRISE, Arizona — Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kuutbidze's run at the intercollegiate Tennis Association's Fall Nationals tournament came to end on Thursday with a 7-5, 6-3 loss to a California team in the round of 16.
Kononova and Kutubidze had six set points in the set and were up a double break at 5-2. But once they let the Golden Bears team back into the match they could not end the Cal momentum swing.
"We got off to a great start but did not execute when we had the opportunity to close out the first set," said head coach Sujay Lama. "Once we let them off the hook we were not able to match their energy and aggression."
On Wednesday, Kononova and Kutubidze became the first doubles team in program history to to advance to the round of 16 with a 7-5, 6-1 win over the No. 24 nationally ranked doubles team.Â
UNT let a early lead slip away in that match as well but was able to overcome it.
On Thursday that wasn't the case.Â
"This was a missed opportunity but the ladies will learn from it," Lama said. "Tamuna and Maria know they are  right up there with the best teams in the nation. With hard work they are capable of putting themselves in a position in the spring to win a national championship."
