DALLAS - After defeating TCU and Ouachita Baptist over the weekend, North Texas swim and dive took home both athlete of the week awards from Conference-USA.Â
Sophomore Leigh Faires McGee was named the swimmer of the week for her efforts in the 1000- and 500-yard freestyle. She won in both events, with a time of 10:36.72 in the 1000 and 5:03.53 in the 500. McGee also swam the second leg of the first place 200-yard freestyle relay team which finished in 1:37.66.
McGee battled illness early in the week, and head coach Brittany Roth was impressed with the sophomore's effort. McGee is the second UNT swimmer to win the award this year after senior Brittany Thurstin won the first edition.Â
"She did a great job," Roth said. "She stepped up in multiple events and showed her range. We were concerned [with her sickness] and endurance but she's such a team player that she was willing to step up for her team and do what was needed of her."Â
Senior diver Averie Ruiz was named the C-USA diver of the week for her season high in the 1-meter dive at 259.20, finishing second. Ruiz also posted a sixth-place score in the 3-meter dive at 228.45. It is part of a trend of improvement for the senior, who is the first North Texas diver to win the award this season.Â
"Averie did really well this weekend," diving coach Mark Murdock said. "She's getting really close to a zone cut which is awesome. She needs to clean a few things up but she is doing really well."Â
The Mean Green return to action at home against Rice University on January 11 for senior night at 6 p.m.Â
