Mean Green Travel To Indiana State
12/4/2018 1:09:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Game Notes
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — After the Mean Green (8-1) men's basketball team returned from Oklahoma and its 73-57 loss in Norman and before its first practice a couple days later, head coach Grant McCasland brought his team together and looked them in the eyes and reflected on what he saw that went wrong in their first loss of the season.
As he talked his own eyes widen and his voice raised to emphasis and stress the importance of what they needed to fix.
He told a story about how when he played at Baylor, despite being undersized for even a guard, he played tough and physical, especially if it meant protecting his pride. Even sometimes in practice against his own teammates, some of who went on to play in the NBA, such as Brian Skinner.
He wrapped up his speech, still piercing all 15 of his players in the eyes, by challenging them to use their first loss and turn it into something positive the week in practice between their next game and then in the coming games.
First of which is on the road against Indiana State (5-1) on Wednesday at the house that basketball hall of famer John Wooden built and where fellow hall of famer Larry Bird's jersey hangs up high.
Tip-off is schedule for 6:00 p.m. CT. The game is being broadcasted on ESPN3/+ and on the radio at KNTU 88.1 FM, KHYI 95.3 or on the tuneIN app. The voice of the Mean Green, Dave Barnett and Hank Dickenson will be on the call.
11 STRAIGHT
Roosevelt Smart has scored in double figures in 11 straight games played. The last time he didn't score in double figures was Feb. 24 at FAU (8 pts), which was also the last time he didn't make a 3-pointer in a game. Smart and Old Dominion guard Ahmed Caver lead Conference USA in consecutive games played in double figures scoring. Campbell's Chris Clemons has the nation's active leading streak at 89 straight games. The NCAA all-time record is 115.
AGAINST YOUR BEST
Maine's Isaiah White is the only opposing team's season leading scorer to score more than his season average against the Mean Green. For the year, opponents' leading scorers are averaging 10 points per game against UNT and on averaging the Mean Green are holding opponents' leading scorer to 4.7 points below their season average. They held Oklahoma's Christian James to nine points despite entering the game averaging 20 per game.
MOST NOVEMBER WINS
North Texas won eight games in the month of November for the first time in program history. They had won five in November multiple times, most recently in 2010 but never six or more. However, before the 1980s the seasons rarely started before Thanksgiving. UNT only won four games in November last year.
198 FROM 1K
While junior Roosevelt Smart garners a lot of attention for being the team's top scorer after he scored a program-record 742 points last year, junior Ryan Woolridge is actually the team's active leading scorer. Woolridge sits at 802 career points, 34 more than Smart currently.
Depending on who gets to 1,000 first, they will be the 22nd player in program history to reach the milestone. The last UNT player to surpass 1,000 career points was Jordan Williams towards the end of his junior season in 2013-14. Williams graduated in 2015 with 1,501 points, which is ninth-most in school history
