Brann Faces 31 Shots
FRISCO — Just two matches into the season and North Texas soccer has already picked up an award and it was given to a newcomer.
Redshirt freshman Kelsey Brann has been named the conference's goalkeeper of the week after facing 31 shots over the two matches, including saving what would have been a game-winning goal on Sunday versus Alabama in overtime.
"I think that it's really crazy that I won the award this early into joining the team," Brann said. "I'm really excited about it and I hope to win it more and help the team win especially with the teams we have coming up on the schedule."
Brann, a Humble, Texas, native who transferred to UNT this summer from Tulsa, was inserted into the starting 11 in the Mean Green's exhibition matches and after a solid performance was given the starting job on Friday versus Incarnate Word.
The Mean Green beat the Cardinals 3-0 on Friday and Brann didn't face a heavy amount of pressure or shot attempts, only two, but on Sunday versus Alabama she was tested.
Brann played the entire 110 minutes versus the Crimson Tide and made nine saves and preserved the 1-1 draw by making two consecutive diving saves in the final minutes of second overtime period.
"The forward had a shot wide open inside the box on the low to the ground back post," Brann explained." That I tipped and the other forward ran to it and both Madeline Guderian and I went to get it and I was able to snatch it from the girls feet."
For the week, Brann had the conference's top goals against average (.45), save percentage (.903) and her shutout was tied for the most this week.
Next, the Mean Green and Brann host Southeastern Louisiana on Friday at 7 p.m. looking to keep their unbeaten record alive. It'll be their only home match of the week and their last until Sept. 2 when they host Pittsburgh at noon.
