DENTON - Off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2012, the North Texas volleyball team puts its unblemished record on the line against No. 12 Baylor at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Ferrell Center in Waco.
For many of the Mean Green, it will mark the first meeting with a nationally-ranked squad. Short of watching film and reading up on scouting reports, most of the preparation has been internal.
"We just need to focus on being very competitive and playing our side of the net instead of focusing on what they're doing," sophomore outside hitter Barbara Teakell said.
"A lot of it is mentally preparing myself for how different the competition will be," freshman outside hitter Rhett Robinson said. "They might be more talented physically on the other side, so I have to be smarter."
North Texas is 12-22 all-time against the Bears and lost in four sets when the schools last faced off in 2016. Then-freshman Jordyn WIlliams registered eight kills at a .312 clip with an ace and five blocks.
This past weekend, the Mean Green won nine-straight sets and recorded two of the program's top-10 single-match attack percentages on its way to a second-straight North Texas Invitational title.
"I was excited to see how everyone played once gametime came and how they reacted to different situations," Teakell said. "Overall, we did pretty well, but we can always improve."
However, the biggest takeaway for the players and coaches from the team's opening matches had less to do with volleyball. From the bench to the center of the court, each of the student-athletes was showing love and support to one another throughout the tournament.
"You can have all the talent in the world, but if you don't have chemistry, then there's no way you can be a great team," Teakell said. "I think it's exciting how well we blend together."
The love and support continued to flow in practice Monday, when the team found out that three student-athletes received weekly honors from Conference USA. Valerie Valerian was named the Offensive Player of the Week, Karley York was named the Setter of the Week and Robinson was tabbed Co-Freshman of the Week.
A member of the all-tournament team, Valerian led the team in kills per set (4.11), hit percentage (.453) and aces (5). The tournament MVP, York averaged 12.67 assists per set. Robinson enjoyed a successful debut weekend, averaging 3.11 kills and nearly four points per set.
