IRVING – North Texas junior defender Dominique James has been named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Mean Green to a shutout in their only game this past week.
James played all 90 minutes at center back in her team's 2-0 win at Houston Baptist and led the UNT defense to contain the Huskies to just four shots and only one in the second-half.
"Definitely well deserving for Dominique," said head coach John Hedlund. "She runs our defense and is a big reason we lead the conference in goals against average."
James has played all 90 minutes in the Mean Green's (5-1-1) last four consecutive games and has been critical in the team's .415 goals-against-average, which not only is the best in C-USA but the 18th best in the nation. James was the conference's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and on her own has blocked 10 shots through the team's first seven games.
A captain on the team, she has helped lead the team to four shutout wins so far this season by being a physical and vocal leader in the center of the Mean Green defense.
James and UNT begin conference play this week as they travel to Old Dominion on Friday for a 6:00 p.m. central time start.
