HOUSTON — The North Texas soccer team's senior Taylor Torres is having her best start to a season in her four years at UNT.
Friday night at Houston Baptist (2-4) she emphasized that by scoring two goals in the match's first 14 minutes to lead the Mean Green (5-1-1) to a 2-0 victory over the Huskies.
Through North Texas' first seven matches, Torres has now scored five goals and recorded 14 points, just five points shy of tying her 2017 season total, which was a career-best for her.
"It was a nice road win tonight against a very good hardworking HBU team," said head coach John Hedlund. "They've had some great results this season, beating Houston 3-1 and almost taking SMU on the road into overtime, so I knew we had to start out fast with our offense and play solid defense.
"Kelsey (Brann) came up big for us tonight making some great saves to get the shutout and Taylor had another outstanding performance up front, scoring both goals," he added.
Torres scored her first goal in the game's fifth minute when freshman Olivia Klein found Torres in front of the net for the assist. Torres' shot came from just outside the keeper box.
The assist is Klein's second on the year and combined with her three goals gives her eight points, which is tied for the second-most on the team with senior Aaliyah Nolan. Torres and Klein have connected on four of the Mean Green's 15 goals so far this season.
Torres found the back of the net again less than 10 minutes later when she cleaned up a blocked shot from who else, but Klein.
"I did start off rough in the beginning but I did not let that get in my head" Torres explained. "I stayed positive. Once I got my first goal of the season, I knew I was going up from there."
As a team, North Texas' offense was full throttle as they put up 11 shots in the first-half. UNT remains undefeated this season when they take 10 or more shots in a game. They finished with 19 shots to HBU's 4.
Though they didn't score in the second-half, UNT put three shots on goal and had a couple good opportunities.
The silent star of Friday's match was redshirt freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Brann who improved her season record to 5-1-1 and now has four shutouts and is just two shutouts shy of entering the top 10 for most in a single-season in program history.
Friday's match was the start of a five-match road trip for UNT, which is tied for the longest in program-history. The Mean Green will remain in Houston and play again on Sunday at Texas Southern, which will be North Texas' final non-conference match of 2018.
