UT San Antonio Lone Star Invitational
TPC San Antonio AT&T Oaks Course | San Antonio
The North Texas men's golf team opens the 2018-19 season with its first tournament of the fall. After finishing the 2017-18 season ranked No. 65 in the GolfStat national rankings, UNT finished fifth at the Conference USA tournament and sent Ian Snyman to the NCAA tournament as an at-large bid. Now, Snyman is gone, but the Mean Green return a wealth of experience and add some talented newcomers.
THE EVENT: The TPC San Antonio AT&T Oaks Course is a 7,435-yard, par-72 course. The two-day tournament begins Monday, with teams teeing off at 8 a.m.
THE FIELD: There are 15 teams in the tournament: UT San Antonio, UNT, McNeese State, UTEP, Rice, Arkansas State, Louisiana-Monroe, Lipscomb, South Alabama, Louisiana, Little Rock, Southern Mississippi, Sam Houston State and Texas State.
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Viktor Forslund, Thomas Rosenmueller, Kristof Ulenaers, Lenny Bergsson and Vitek Novak. Jordan Sanders will compete as an individual.
RESULTS: Live results will be posted on GolfStat.com. Full recaps from each day of competition will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com.
LAST TIME OUT: A furious rally fell just short as North Texas finished fifth after the final day of stroke play at the Conference USA championship to miss the match play round by one spot.
INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR: The Mean Green feature six international players this year, and a seventh in freshman JP Lavalle, who was born in Mexico City but went to high school in The Woodlands, near Houston. Lenny Bergsson (Iceland), Viktor Forslund (Sweden), Vitek Novak (Czech Republic), Henri Renouard (France), Thomas Rosenmueller (Germany) and Kristof Ulenaers (Belgium) round out the international players.
STRACKE SAYS: "The team is excited to get this season underway," UNT coach Brad Stracke said. "We have a nice mix of experience and new faces in the lineup. I'm looking forward to watching these guys compete Monday and Tuesday."
UP NEXT: North Texas will return to the Trinity Forest Invitational, hosted by SMU, on Sept. 23-25 in Dallas. UNT tied for sixth at the tournament last year in its inaugural trip to the event.
HOME SWEET MARIDOE: North Texas enjoys its home course -- the Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton. The course opened to members in July 2017 and gives the Mean Green a state-of-the-art home course with world-class facilities, including a fully-dedicated practice facility, complete with a two-ended driving range to account for many varying wind conditions, a sprawling three-acre short game retreat and indoor facilities with state-of-the-art hitting bays that provide tools the program has not yet had at its disposal.
