DALLAS — For the second week in a row, North Texas soccer players Dominique James and Kelsey Brann were named Conference USA Players of the Week.
On Sunday in the Mean Green's (9-3, 4-0-0) only match of the week, Brann shutout her fourth straight opponent — all conference opponents — and now has eight shutouts on the year, which is tied for the second-most in the nation and just one off the leader.
"The defense is playing really well this year and I think that's really contributed to my overall success as well," Brann said. "Dom and I know that our offense is still developing and we have many young players so we can't be off our game, because we know that our success as a team comes mostly from how strong we are on defense. I'm trying my best every game to stay locked in and not let anybody catch me off my guard so we can keep getting shutouts."
UNT beat UT San Antonio 1-0 on Sunday and Brann made six saves, including one near post that the Roadrunners' forward took from just a few yards out. Brann is the only keeper in C-USA yet to give up a goal. Rice has allowed the next fewest with two.
This is the redshirt sophomore Brann's second C-USA Goalkeeper of the Week honor this season and her third overall.
James, who this week split votes and is the C-USA Co-Defensive Player of the Week, has made a habit of earning player of the week honors. This is the defending C-USA Player of the Year's third straight C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honor.
James, a senior, earned three all of last year when she was both the defensive player of the year and player of the year.
On Sunday, James blocked two UTSA shots and played all 90 minutes in the Mean Green's win. She has played 450 consecutive minutes for the UNT defense that has a league leading .75 goals-against average for the season.
"I'm really happy for Kelsey and Dom, well deserved," said head coach John Hedlund. "Both players along with (Brooke) Lampe, Natalie (Newell), Madeline (Guderian) and Logan (Bruffett) really had to bring their A game to get a tough result on the road against a solid UTSA team."
