NORTHRIDGE, California — The North Texas tennis team concluded the Cal State University Northridge Invite as champions.
Freshman Hala Khaled Badwy won her single's flight championship. Junior NIdhi Surapaneni won her consolation flight championship. Badwy and senior Alexandra Heczey won their consolation doubles flight title and freshman Kexuan Zhou won the consolation singles championship.
After a slow start to the three-day tournament, the Mean Green regrouped and made great strides in the final days of what is the final fall tournament of the year, ending with multiple titles and going 7-2 on Sunday.
"We got better each day and definitely played our best today," said head coach Sujay Lama. "This tournament was a perfect way for us to end our fall season. We experienced tremendous growth as a team both on and off the court."
Badwy won the singles flight championship by winning four straight matches, winning two of the four in straight sets including a 6-0 thumping in the clinching set of the championship match.
In the semifinals of the flight, Bawdy fell behind early losing the first set to her LMU opponent but stayed resilient and came from behind to advance to the finals round.
"This tournament was tough but I made it and couldn't have made it without my coaches and teammates," Badwy said. "All the support I got from coach Rodrigo and the way he believed in me even when I was set down in the semifinals, really supported me and the support that I got from the seven girls was awesome.
"Coach Sujay is the best and we are eight girls but in one body when it comes to tennis. For me I'm really happy about it because that is the way the end of the fall semester and also the best way to start my college career. All of the team is really excited for the spring season and we believe we can make something big happen," she added.
Badwy exemplified the resilience of the team in doubles with Heczey. After losing on the opening day, Heczey and Badwy picked up two straight over Utah State and UC Santa Barbara to win the consolation doubles title with a 6-4 win over a UC Santa Barbara doubles team.
Zhou did the same.
After losing on Friday to her BYU opponent, Zhou bounced back with three straight wins, including an exciting 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 win in the semifinals. In the consolation finals, Zhou had one of the most dominate wins of all the tournament by defeating her Pepperdine opponent 6-0, 6-1, putting icing on the cake for the day.
Surapaneni also bounced back from the first day loss
"We cannot wait for the dual match season this spring," Lama said. "We have a great group of ladies with a variety of game styles and personality. With continued hard work, we have much to look forward to."
