DENTON – History will be made tomorrow morning when the NCAA Cross Country Championship course is graced by the same North Texas runner for the second consecutive year for the first time in program history.
Â
The Lavern Gibson Cross Country Course on the campus of Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana will play host to the 2019 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Senior Florian Lussy will compete for a National Title in the men's 10K beginning at 11:15 a.m.
Â
"I'm very proud of Florian for making it here twice," head coach Kevin Williams said. "There have been a lot of ups and downs this past year but he always seems to find a way to get the job done."
Â
Lussy qualified for the NCAAs with his seventh place individual finish at the South Central Regional a week ago. The senior clocked a 30:22.1 in the 10K to lock up his second Nationals bid in as many seasons. The senior was the fourth fastest individual runner not associated with the winning teams, Arkansas and Texas.
Â
The Oberdorf, Switzerland native also garnered All-Region honors after the race after already being named to the Conference USA All-Academic team on October 31.
Â
A year ago Lussy made program history when he clocked the fastest time recorded at the NCAA Championships in North Texas program history. His 10K time of 31:02.8 was good enough for 149 individually while running in a tough field.
Â
"I think last year he got great experience about how to run this race and will be much more prepared this time around," Williams said. "This course is challenging but the conditions will be rough which tends to help him."
Â
Fans can tune into a livestream of the race on FloTrack, however a Pro membership will be required.
