George Leads Way For UNT In Exhibition Win

DENTON – Anisha George entered this season knowing her team would need more from the senior post from St. Croix.
As the lone senior on the UNT women's basketball roster, she carries weight in the locker room, and on Sunday afternoon at The Super Pit, she showed she can carry plenty of weight on the floor, too.
George scored her team's first 10 points before finishing her afternoon with a game-high 26, on 11-of-12 shooting, to go with seven rebounds (including five on the offensive end) and three blocked shots in a 95-43 runaway win in an exhibition game against TWU.
"My goal is to improve and get better and help the team as much as I can," George said.
When asked if she was more prepared for her senior season than she was at this time a year ago, she quickly fired back.
"Definitely. More in shape. More consistent. Attitude is in check. Less fouls. I'm definitely more ready," she said.
She showed it on Sunday in the final tune-up before the regular season begins Thursday at 11:30 a.m., with a home game against Mid-America Christian, but unlike last season when head coach Jalie Mitchell had to depend heavily on one scorer in the graduated Terriell Bradley, George appears to have other threats by her side.
Freshman point guard N'Yah Boyd ran the floor with confidence, dropped in a couple of highlight-reel passes and finished her first taste of college basketball with 17 points and eight rebounds to go with three assists and three steals. She scored 15 of her points from long distance, making good on 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.
"I'm happy with the way they played," UNT head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "It's not going to be perfect but 100 percent effort needs to be there always. We played hard. We didn't do anything perfectly but what we asked for as coaching staff as far as effort, they gave us."
"They're (newcomers) gaining experience, which is really awesome," Mitchell added. "That's what non-conference is for when you have a young group like this."
Sophomore forward Charlene Shepherd chipped in 12 points and six rebounds in a reserve role, and UNT shot 50.8 percent from the field while holding TWU to 25.5 percent.
"I just wanted to make sure we were efficient with the shots we were taking," Mitchell said. "We shot well because we moved the ball well. We played selfless, team ball, and 19 assists is some proof of that. We took the open shot, and we knocked it down."
Just as Mitchell said everyone, including the young players, still had plenty to work on before the season begins Thursday, Boyd gave herself a mixed review of her first college game. But if what she flashed in her 31-plus minutes is any indication of what is to come, it's going to be a good year for the Mean Green freshman.
"I'm OK with how I played," she said, with a smile. "I could've played better. As far as my first game, I thought it was good. Once I got my feet wet, everything was straight."
