DENTON – In the final tune-up before conference play begins, North Texas women's basketball dominated Texas A&M-Texarkana, 114-54, as three Mean Green recorded double-doubles and the team eclipsed the 100-point mark for the sixth time in program history Sunday afternoon inside The Super Pit.
Destinee McDowell, Charlene Shepherd and Callie Owens each racked up double-doubles for North Texas (6-6) against TAMUT (2-13). McDowell registered her second of the year with a game and career-high 26 points along with 12 rebounds. Shepherd's first double-double included career-highs of 17 points and 15 boards, while the first by Owens was made by tying a UNT career-best 16 points as well as a career-high 11 rebounds.
"To have three people with double-doubles speaks volume at the end of the day to our execution," head coach Jalie Mitchell said.
The 114 points were just two shy of the program record set during the 1997-98 season versus Texas Southern. The last time UNT scored 100 or more was last season in a 100-75 win over Houston Baptist, and the next most recent was the Texas Southern contest over two decades ago.
Summer Jones notched double figures for the first time as a Mean Green with 14 points, and Jazion Jackson scored a career-high 13. Randi Thompson was impactful with game and career-highs in assists (six), steals (six) and rebounds (five). N'Yah Boyd added 15 points, and Trena Mims also dished out six assists.
"I thought today was a day where we responded better than we have in the past, and I know we want to play at a high level and compete at a high level; we want to win," Mitchell said. "I know that about our players, and I know that every day, every game that we have the rest of the season we're going to show up and compete."
UNT outmatched TAMUT, a first-year NAIA program, in nearly every statistical category. The Mean Green posted 80 points in the paint compared to 10 by the Eagles and collected 46 fast break points to TAMUT's zero. UNT set season-highs in rebounds (63), field goal percentage (50.5), free throw percentage (88.9), assists (20) and steals (18) as well as a program-best 46 field goals.
"I thought we shared the ball well and took care of the ball for the most part. We did some things that we wanted to do and shot it really well. The most proud stat is probably the free throws – 16-of-18 from the line," Mitchell said.
The Mean Green begin Conference USA play Thursday versus Western Kentucky at 7 p.m. inside the Super Pit.
