2/16/2019 12:31:00 PM | Men's Golf
The All-American Intercollegiate
Golf Club of Houston | Humble, Texas
The North Texas men's golf team returns to action for its first tournament of the spring season. The Mean Green are currently ranked No. 64 in the most recent GolfStat national poll and will be making their spring debut a week after several schools began their spring seasons.
Â
THE EVENT: The Golf Club of Houston will play at 7,096 yards, and will be a par-72 course for the tournament. The three-day event begins Sunday, with teams teeing off at 8 a.m., on Holes 1 and 10, all three days.
Â
THE FIELD: There are 14 teams participating in the tournament: No. 37 Baylor, Charlotte, Houston, Lamar, Louisiana, McNeese State, New Mexico State, No. 64 North Texas, No. 49 Ole Miss, Rice, Sam Houston State, No. 34 South Carolina, UT-Arlington and UT-San Antonio.
Â
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Viktor Forslund, Kristof Ulenaers, Lenny Bergsson, Jordan Sanders and Thomas Rosenmueller. Henri Renouard will compete as an individual.
Â
RESULTS: Live results will be posted on GolfStat.com. Full recaps from each day of competition will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of each round.
Â
LAST TIME OUT: North Texas wrapped the fall season in October at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational at Isleworth in Windermere, Florida. The field was stacked, with 10 top-50 teams, and the Mean Green climbed two spots on the leaderboard on the third and final day after shooting an even-par 288 in the final round – a vast improvement over their first two rounds of the tournament.
Â
INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR: The Mean Green feature five international players this year, and a sixth in freshman JP Lavalle, who was born in Mexico City but went to high school in The Woodlands, near Houston. Lenny Bergsson (Iceland), Viktor Forslund (Sweden), Henri Renouard (France), Thomas Rosenmueller (Germany) and Kristof Ulenaers (Belgium) round out the international players.
Â
ROSENMUELLER IN PALMER RUNNING: Rosenmueller is one of the Mean Green's five international players and is currently ranked No. 23 in the Arnold Palmer Cup International rankings in advance of June's Arnold Palmer Cup, to be held at The Alotian Club in Roland, Arkansas. The event will pit the nation's top 12 college golfers from the United States against the nation's top 12 international collegiate golfers. The top six golfers receive automatic invites to the International team. The remaining six spots will be between the winner of the R&A Scholars Tournament, four committee selections and a coach's selection. The next set of rankings will be released on Feb. 28.
Â
STRACKE SAYS: "The field isn't quite as strong as it was last year, but it's still a decent field and we have a great shot of going down there and making some noise. If we go down and play really well, we'll win. It's just a matter of going out and playing at a high level. Some teams will have already played a tournament and will have a leg up on the rest of the field, but I think we'll be ready to go."
Â
UP NEXT: North Texas will have a quick turnaround from the All-American when it travels to the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette, Louisiana, Feb. 25-26.
Â
HOME SWEET MARIDOE: North Texas enjoys its home course -- the Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton. The course opened to members in July 2017 and gives the Mean Green a state-of-the-art home course with world-class facilities, including a fully-dedicated practice facility, complete with a two-ended driving range to account for many varying wind conditions, a sprawling three-acre short game retreat and indoor facilities with state-of-the-art hitting bays that provide tools the program has not yet had at its disposal.
