Maier in Contention Through 36 Holes at American Championship

SARASOTA, Fla. – UNT men's golfer Mitchell Maier continued his stellar run at the American Conference Championship on Tuesday, firing another 67 to complete the second round in solo third.
At 10-under, Maier trails Memphis' Diego Do Patrocinio Lourenco by two strokes for the individual lead. The freshman made seven more birdies Tuesday, increasing his tournament-best total to 13, and has surrendered just three total bogeys over the first two days of competition. Maier is also one of four players in the field to have shot under par on the Ritz-Carlton's par-3 holes and has now recorded four 67-or-better rounds this season.
Competing in just his first career postseason tournament, Maier enters Wednesday with a chance to become UNT's first conference champion since 2021 and secure an automatic berth to an NCAA Regional next month.
North Texas maintained its No. 7 spot on the leaderboard after compiling a 2-over 290 as a team. It is within striking distance of its fourth consecutive top-five finish at the conference tournament, sitting just seven shots back of fifth-place UAB. Memphis posted the low round of the day to claim the top spot at 30-under.
Blake Keen improved his leaderboard standing by 11 spots thanks to a 71 in the second round. He has now shot under par in four of his five career rounds at the American Championship. Meanwhile, Kalle Svederman and Alex Huang both carded rounds of 76 to land in ties for 37th and 40th, respectively.
Rounding out the Mean Green was Rafael Estrada, who was inserted into the lineup prior to Tuesday's action and signed off on a 5-over 77.
The Mean Green are expected to tee off for the final round Wednesday at 8:28 a.m. CT alongside Wichita State and Florida Atlantic on the 10th hole. Fans can follow live results here or watch coverage on ESPN+, which begins at 11:30 a.m.
