MGSB Looks To Extend Unbeaten Run In Waco
2/21/2019 5:00:00 PM | Softball
WACO – After an undefeated weekend at home, the North Texas softball team travels to Waco to compete in the Baylor Invitational. The Mean Green (8-1) will face No. 21 Baylor, Kent State and No. 10 Louisiana-Lafayette (11-0) in the three-day tournament.
Â
Baylor (7-4) will be the second ranked opponent for the Mean Green in 2019. North Texas run-ruled Texas A&M 10-2 in the opening weekend when the Aggies were ranked No. 20. Head coach Rodney DeLong believes this weekend could be big for the Mean Green coming off a five-game unbeaten run.
"It's a great challenge," DeLong said. "We've played and beat some good teams this year, but we've moved on from that. It is a big test and a big opportunity this weekend."
Â
The Mean Green open with Kent State (3-2) Friday at 10 a.m. before squaring off with No. 21 Baylor at 3 p.m. North Texas will look to continue its offensive prowess from the Mean Green Classic.
Â
After 45 hits across four games in Denton, the Mean Green rank 18th in the nation in batting average at .350 as a team. Junior outfielder Katie Clark leads the nation in hits at 21, the only Division-I player to amass 20-plus hits this season. She has driven in 13 runs while batting .568.
Â
"Confidence is a big thing right now and we've got it," DeLong said. "We are swinging the bat well. All through our lineup is dangerous."
Â
The Mean Green have seven hitters hitting .320 or above. In the circle, the Mean Green have allowed just 23 runs through 63.2 innings. Sophomore pitcher Hope Trautwein, named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week on Monday, is holding opposing batters to hitting .100, while junior Jenna Goodrich has hitters swinging at .205. Both have combined to strikeout 56 batters.
Â
"We have confidence in our coaching," Trautwein said. "We trust in our coaching and we are trusting in each other as teammates."
Â
The action gets started from Getterman Stadium at 10 a.m. against Kent State before the Mean Green face the Bears at 3 p.m. Live stats will be carried, as well as live updates on the Mean Green's social media channels, @MeanGreenSB
