WACO – After opening the weekend 0-3, North Texas softball put together two-straight wins to finish strong and win the Baylor Invitational.
The Mean Green (10-4) defeated Kent State 9-0 in the championship game on Sunday afternoon after defeating #10 Louisiana to close Saturday. Led by a dominant performance from Hope Trautwein, the Mean Green bats came to life to push across nine runs on 10 hits.
Trautwein allowed just two hits and five base-runners in total. It was her sixth win of the season as her ERA sits around 0.84 in 2019.
"Hope is very talented," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "She gives us a chance in every game she pitches. She threw well all weekend. She threw well against Baylor as well. We just made some mistakes in that game. I'm very proud of Hope."
North Texas' bats got going early on Sunday. Jenna Goodrich laced a double to score two-runs in the first before Hanna Rebar singled to bring home Goodrich and Rhylie Makawe. Goorich struck again with a two-run homer to left that was hit very well.
Goodrich finished 2-for-3 with four RBI. She hit well in North Texas' two wins. She drove home five runs on three hits for a .250 average in the final two games.
"We took care of business today," DeLong said. "We finished a lot better than we started."
Gregory and Clark hit well in the front third of the Mean Green lineup. Clark had two doubles and four hits in 17 at-bats across the weekend. Gregory's average for the weekend (.471) pushed .500 – which would have matched her on-base percentage in the five games. She had eight hits, driving in five runs and had a home run.
"I think our whole line up right now has confidence," Gregory said. "I think this team just has confidence, and we played like it these last two games. We know we can come out here and compete with these teams and we were really disappointed we weren't showing it. These last two games we played like ourselves, like we have the last two weekends."
The Mean Green will face a short turnaround for the first time this season. North Texas travels to Arlington to face UT – Arlington on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
"We've got to have a good week of practice," DeLong said. "Some of the struggles this weekend are my fault. I want to make sure we are prepared and ready to go. We're going to go to work."
