DENTON — For the first time in 19 days, the Mean Green men's basketball team is playing a home basketball game.
North Texas (20-8, 8-7 C-USA) host Florida Atlantic (16-12, 7-8 C-USA) at the Super Pit on Thursday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and on the Mean Green Sports Radio Network, KHYI 95.3 FM. You can also listen to the game with the tuneIN app.
Thursday's game will be a blackout as the team will be wearing black at home for the first time since March 19, 2018 when they beat Mercer 96-67 in the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational.
In that game against Mercer, Jorden Duffy and Roosevelt Smart scored 31 points each — a career-high for Duffy. Smart also chipped in with a 11 rebounds in the game.
On Thursday versus the Owls, the Mean Green will be aiming to capture their 13th home win of the season. Its a feat UNT has accomplished since the 2010-11 season when they finished 14-2 at home and reached the final round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
They will also be attempting to win their 21st game of the season, which would be one more than last year and be the most since the 2010-11 season when they went 22-11.
Thursday's game against FAU is the second to last home game for the Mean Green who host Marshall on Sunday at 3 p.m. before concluding the regular season at Florida International the following week in Miami.
Sunday's game against the Thundering Herd is Senior Day. North Texas will honor its three seniors — Tope Arikawe, Jorden Duffy and Michael Miller — before the game. The Mean Green beat Marshall 78-51 on Feb. 7.
THE NATION'S 13th BEST SCORING DEFENSE
North Texas owns the nation's 13th-best scoring defense. They give up just 62.0 ppg. It ranks second in C-USA behind Old Dominion who ranks eighth in the nation at 61.1 ppg.
FRESHMAN RECORD
On Feb. 16 at FIU, UNT redshirt freshman Hank Dickenson. Umoja Gibson set the school record for most three-pointers in a single-season with his 78th of the year.
20 FROM 1K
Junior Roosevelt Smart is just 20 points shy of scoring his 1,000th of his UNT career. He'd be just the fifth Mean Green basketball player to score 1,000 points in two seasons or less.
ONLY TEAM IN THE COUNTRY
North Texas is the only team in the country that has six guys with a double-digit scoring average (Woolridge 12.3 ppg, Gibson 12.1 ppg, Smart 11.3 ppg, Miller 11.0 ppg, Duffy 10.3 ppg, Z. Simmons 10.3 ppg).
CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
The 2019 Air Force Reserve C-USA Basketball Championships presented by Baylor Scott & White Sports Performance Center at the Star will be held in Frisco March 13-16 at the Ford Center.
