ATLANTA – North Texas swim and dive kicked off the 2019 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Championships Wednesday afternoon on the campus of Georgia Tech.
Wednesday's events included Mean Green swimmers setting a school record in the finals for the 200-yard medley relay, while qualifying for CSCAA Nationals in that race as well as the 800-yard freestyle relay.
"That was a really great start," head coach Brittany Roth said. "We're feeling really good. In these relay races there are a lot of nerves and high emotions, but I think it's a really great way to start the meet."
North Texas claimed 32 points with a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a program record time of 1:40.08. Junior Jowita Sienczyk started the record-breaking swim off by turning in a 25.24 in the backstroke. Senior Meaghan Rousset followed Sienczyk's swim with a 28.25 time in the breastroke. A 24.39 time in the butterfly by senior Emmabeth Jensen set up senior Brittany Thurstin to bring home the school record in the freestyle, her time of 22.20 solidified the record. The Mean Green only fell behind Florida International and Rice University.
"They all swam so fast," Roth said. "It really got everybody excited."
The heat earned the team a trip to CSCAA Nationals in March in Cleveland, Ohio.
A fourth-place finish for the Mean Green earned the team another 30 points in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The time of 7:19.19 earned the quad of sophomore Leigh Faires McGee, freshmen Bryanna Vasquez, Karigan Stanley and Alvena Walpole a trip to the CSCAA Nationals as well.
Roth was excited the way her freshmen handled swam behind the upperclassmen.
"The way they handled themselves," Roth said. "I'm really impressed. I'm excited for not only what this meant in this meet, but for their careers going forward."
North Texas sits in a tie for third place with Marshall with 62 points at the end of day one. The Mean Green will look to gain ground in search of their first conference title in Thursdays schedule.
