Team History Continues at CUSA Championships

ATLANTA – North Texas swim and dive had yet another historic day at the Conference USA Swim and Dive Championships in day three of competition. The Mean Green set new school records in the 100 fly and 200 freestyle.
"Proud doesn't even begin to describe how I feel about this team," head coach Brittany Roth said. "These girls are selfless, hard-working, and hungry. I'm excited about what we have coming tomorrow."
Senior Emmabeth Jensen brought home the gold medal in the 100 fly, setting a new school record at 53.80. Sophomore Leigh Faires McGee set the other school record, placing second in the 200 freestyle. She swam it in 1:46.66, tying for second with Marshall.
"Our athletes started with the team pursuit in mind," Roth said. "In doing so, they ended the day with every student-athlete competing in finals, and accomplishing things this program has never seen in Conference USA. Every team member had a hand in how we ended the night."
Freshman Karigan Stanley led the way in the 400 IM, placing 12th with a time of 4:26.78. Freshman Jordan Gorham (4:30.27) came 14th with fellow freshmen Addy de Tassanyi in 16th (4:35.84) and Brianna Hanley in 20th (4:39).
The 100-yard backstroke was another podium finish for North Texas with junior Jowita Sienczyk coming third with a time of 54.27, a career best. In the 100-yard butterfly Brittany Thurstin came 4th with a career best time of 54.74. Freshman Alvena Walpole finished 10th out of the B-Final with a time of 56.59.
In the B-Final of the 200 freestyle, freshman Bryanna Vasquez came 9th with a career best time of 1:50.53. The 100-yard breaststroke saw upperclassmen leading the way. Senior Meaghan Rousset came 6th in her first ever A-Final with a time of 1:03.01 while Thurstin came in 9th at 1:03.40. Senior Kathleen Rousset finished 12th with a time of 1:04.41. Sophomore Ula Michalczyk rounded out North Texas' placings with a time of 1:05.01 to come 14th.
In the final swimming event of the day, the Mean Green brought home a bronze medal in the 400-yard medley relay. Sienczyk, Meaghan Rousset, Jensen and McGee swam a blistering 3:41.45, just two tenths off the school record.
The divers competed in 1-meter diving. All Mean Green divers competed in the B-Final. The Mean Green took home the top three spots (9-11) in the B-Final and 13th place.
Sophomore Meaghan Miller led the way with a personal best for North Texas with a dive of 263.45. Senior Averie Ruiz came 10th with a dive of 244.05. Junior Gaby Silva rounded out the top three spots with a 234.80 dive, a 22-point improvement on her prelim score. Freshmen Altaira Wallquist rounded out the placing with a 217.95 dive.
"The competition was tough today," diving coach Mark Murdock said. "Everyone stepped up in the final. Meaghan did very well."
North Texas holds sole possession of third place overall with a score of 379, trailing first-place Florida International University (646.5) and Rice (549.5). The action from Georgia Tech wraps up tomorrow with five events. All events can be streamed on ESPN+.
