BOONE, N.C. – North Texas women's basketball fell a win shy of the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) championship as the Mean Green were defeated at Appalachian State, 76-59, Wednesday night inside the Holmes Center.
North Texas (18-16) made history in 2018-19 with three WBI wins and competing in its first nonconference postseason tournament since the 2001-02 campaign.
Terriell Bradley scored a game-high 22 points, and Grace Goodhart added eight. The Mean Green committed a season-low eight turnovers but were outdone on the boards by the Mountaineers (22-14), 47-to-32. UNT started strong and took a 12-point lead in the first quarter but then stalled offensively and were outscored 61-to-37 the rest of the way. Appalachian State gained their first lead of the contest early in the third quarter at 36-34 as the Mean Green were in the midst of a 1-of-13 showing from the field.
"We started well and fast," head coach Jalie Mitchelll said. "The difference in the game was the third quarter. We got away from our game plan. We weren't present in the offensive rebounding category like we have been all season."
Bradley, an all-tournament selection, nailed her first three attempts, all 3-pointers, and put up 14 points within the first six minutes of the game to give UNT a 20-8 lead. Trena Mims hit a three from the left corner early in the second quarter to keep a 25-17 advantage, but seven straight points by the Mountaineers closed the gap to a single point. Anisha George scored in the paint at the 4:16 mark for a 31-26 lead before App State tied things up at 32-32 heading into the half.
Goodhart began the scoring after the break with a jumper, but four straight Mountaineer layups had the Mean Green trailing, 40-34. Madison Townley broke a five-minute UNT field goal drought with a drive down the right side with four minutes to play in the third quarter. The Mountaineers ended the period on a 13-6 run to take a 58-44 lead.
A 3 by Goodhart from the right side began the fourth, but 11 straight points by App State had the Mean Green trailing 69-47 with 4:29 remaining. UNT finished the game by outscoring the Mountaineers, 7-1, capped by a pair of Tatum Henderson free throws.
"It was a big deal to be here and have this opportunity. I'm proud of their fight," Mitchell said.
Bradley finished her Mean Green career as the fifth-leading scorer with 1,467 points. She will leave as number one in the charts in free throws with 417 and fifth in 3-pointers with 138.
UNT recorded the 12thwinning campaign of the program and produced back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2000-01 and 2001-02. The 18 wins this season mark the highest total in 13 years.
