Defending Champs Picked To Repeat

DALLAS — The seven-time Conference USA champion North Texas soccer team has been picked by the league's head coaches to repeat in 2019.
Additionally, senior defensive centerback Dominique James was voted C-USA Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. At the end of last season, James, a 2018 all-American, was voted the C-USA Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.
The Mean Green, who received one top 25 national vote last week in the United Soccer Coaches' Preseason Poll, received first-place votes from 13 of the 14 C-USA head coaches in the league's preseason poll. The complete preseason poll can be found below.
North Texas captured the 2018 C-USA regular-season championship after posting an 8-1-1 league record and reached a national ranking as high as No. 24. They then won the 2018 C-USA Tournament by outscoring its three opponents 5-2, outlasting Louisiana Tech in penalty kicks in the semifinals and Southern Miss in overtime in the finals.
In 2018, UNT earned its sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament where it faced the No. 16 nationally ranked Texas A&M Aggies in the first round. The Mean Green fell 1-0 in overtime after a goal by Texas A&M in the 108th minute.
North Texas has added 15 newcomers to its 2019 roster but still returns eight starters and a number of key reserves who played in over 90% of last season's 21 matches.
One of the more notable returners is James.
A 2019 preseason Mac Hermann Trophy Watch List selectee — the first in the program's 25-year history — James was one of 13 defenders named to the watch list. The senior is a two-time first-team all-conference selectee and last season was named the league's inaugural Player of the Year. She concluded the awards by being named a third-team all-American. The first in the program's history.
UNT travels to Florida this week for a pair of exhibition matches, facing No. 18 South Florida in Tampa on Friday and Central Florida on Sunday in Orlando.
The regular season begins on Thursday, Aug. 22, when the Mean Green host Northwestern State at their new soccer stadium at 7 p.m. UNT will host nine regular-season matches, five against league opponents. Its first conference game will be at home on Sept. 20 when it hosts Old Dominion. ODU is the only C-USA opponent to beat the Mean Green in the last two seasons.
North Texas hasn't lost a home conference match since Oct. 31, 2008, and has gone a NCAA soccer record 49 consecutive home conference matches without a loss and posted a 46-0-3 record during the stretch.
Following the regular season, the Mean Green will host the 2019 C-USA Tournament beginning Nov. 6. It is the first time UNT will host the soccer conference tournament.
