Tennis Announces 2019-20 Schedule

DENTON — The North Texas tennis team and head coach Sujay Lama have announced their 2019-20 schedule, which includes a spring break trip to Hawaii and 12 home matches.
Lama who is entering his 14th season in Denton will guide a team with five newcomers and three returners.
"We have a great balance this year to challenge our team to develop their game and to ultimately peak for conference championship and postseason," Lama said. "We have a very talented squad with five newcomers who are very eager to compete and get off to strong start."
The Mean Green reached the semifinals of last season's Conference USA tournament for a third time in the last five years. The 2020 C-USA Tournament will be hosted by Florida International in Miami from April 15-19.
UNT's 2020 spring schedule starts Jan. 17 at home versus Stephen F. Austin. North Texas opens its spring schedule with four straight home matches: New Mexico State (Jan. 19), Lamar (Jan. 25), Northwestern State (Feb. 1).
The Mean Green posted a .615 home winning percentage last season and a winning home record 12 of the last 13 seasons.
UNT's first road match will be on Feb. 4 at Sam Houston State.
Following their match in Huntsville, Texas, the Mean Green will face back-to-back power-5 opponents in Tucson, Arizona, when they face Kansas State (Feb. 7) and Arizona (Feb. 8).
North Texas will play its first conference match on Valentine's Day when they host Louisiana Tech (Feb. 14). They then will welcome C-USA foe UTEP to Denton two days later (Feb. 16). Last season, UNT beat the Bulldogs 7-0 and the Miners 4-0.
After a road trip to FIU (Feb. 22) who the Mean Green beat last season in quarterfinals of the conference tournament and a neutral site match against Marshall (Feb. 23), North Texas will hosts American Athletic Conference opponents South Florida (Feb. 27) and Memphis (Feb. 29). North Texas has beaten the Tigers three of the last four years.
After a week break, North Texas will head to Hawaii for two matches.
They'll first take on Liberty (March 10). The Flames are coached by Jeff Maren who spent five seasons in Denton as an associate head coach under Lama. While with the Mean Green, UNT won two conference championships and posted 75-41 overall record. He has been the head coach at Liberty since the 2012-13 season.
Following the match against Liberty in Hawaii, UNT will take on the Rainbow Warriors on March 12 before returning home to face Wichita State (March 21) and then back-to-back on C-USA matches against Middle Tennessee (March 22) and UTSA (March 28). North Texas didn't face Middle Tennessee last season.
North Texas will hosts Senior Day on April 1 against UT Arlington. The Mean Green have beaten the Mustangs four straight years in a row and won on Senior Day 13 of the last 14 years.
After Senior Day, North Texas will travel to Tulsa (April 4) and then SMU (April 10) to conclude the regular season.
North Texas' fall season begins Sept. 27 with the Rice Invite. Junior Nidhi Surapaneni won the 2018 Rice Invite singles flight championship. After the Rice Invite, North Texas will complete in the ITA All-American championship where UNT has become a regular. They then will compete in the ITA Texas Regionals where the Mean Green are the defending doubles champions.
