DALLAS – North Texas soccer senior defensive centerback Dominique James has been named Conference USA's Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Mean Green backline to a shutout victory over the previously unbeaten Old Dominion Monarchs on Friday to open conference play.
This is the defending C-USA Player of the Year's first weekly honor of 2019.
"I'm really proud of our team this week," James said. "The previous few games we had some defensive breakdowns and I'm glad we were able to work together to fix them and secure the win at home. I'm looking forward to continuing our defensive success this upcoming weekend and to get another couple of shutouts."
UNT not only shutout a previously unbeaten ODU team but they shutout a Monarch team who entered Friday's match averaging three goals per game and held them to just two shots on goal.
James played all 90 minutes on Friday and helped guide the Mean Green to their fifth shutout of the season. The win extended the program's already NCAA record home conference unbeaten streak to 50 in a row.
North Texas (6-3-0, 1-0-0) returns to action on Thursday when they host Southern Miss at 7 p.m. at the North Texas Soccer and Track & Field Stadium. They then host Middle Tennessee on Sunday at 1 p.m. UNT beat USM in the conference tournament championship game last season to claim their 15th conference title.
The Mean Green, who have never had a losing season, are celebrating their 25th season as a program in 2019. Only four regular season home matches remain before the 2019 Conference USA Tournament, which the Mean Green are hosting beginning Nov. 6.
