DENTON – After opening conference play with a 1-0 shutout home win over Old Dominion last Friday, the defending Conference USA champion (RV) North Texas soccer team has a 2018 championship round rematch with Southern Miss on Thursday in Denton.
The Mean Green beat the Golden Eagles 2-1 in double overtime to capture the 2018 title. UNT has never lost to Southern Miss and enters Thursday's match having just extended its already NCAA record home conference unbeaten streak to 50 in a row.
Thursday's match will be at 7 p.m. and can be live streamed on CUSA.tv.
After a challenging non-conference schedule that saw North Texas (6-3) face two teams that were ranked in the top 25 at one point this season and a road trip to Alabama, the back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back C-USA champion Mean Green flexed their defensive identity against ODU by holding the previously unbeaten Monarchs to just two shots on goal. ODU entered the match against UNT averaging three goals per game.
The shutout victory was North Texas' fifth of the season and extended its home winning streak to 11 in a row.
This season the Mean Green have outscored their opponents in Denton 16-1. During its current 11-game home winning streak they've outscored their opponents 35-3. Six of those 11 games came against C-USA opponents and they've outscored them 13-2.
Junior Berklee Peters leads the team in goals this season with seven. She scored the lone goal last Friday versus Old Dominion. The seven goals give her one more than she had all of last year and sets a single season career high for the Keller native.
In last year's 3-0 regular season road win at Southern Miss, Peters scored the game's second goal.
North Texas' 2018 all-conference keeper Kelsey Brann, who head coach John Hedlund refers to as "The Rock", has been her usual self this season/ Brann has five shutout victories, which is already half as many as she had all of last regular season. The sophomore is also just one shutout away from moving into third all-time in program history with 17.
Last season's championship match with Southern Miss was eventually won by then senior Lauryn Bruffett who scored the double overtime game-winning goal on a header off of a free kick from Madeline Guderian. Bruffett was named the tournament's offensive MVP.
North Texas' first goal in the championship match was scored by Aaliah Nolan who was the team's leading goal scorer last season but was also a senior and has since graduated.
Thursday's match with Southern Miss will be followed up by another home match. UNT will host Middle Tennessee on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Mean Green beat the Blue Raiders last season in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, also by the score of 2-1 and in double overtime. Last season's win at Middle Tennessee clinched the regular season title for UNT and the No. 1 overall seed in the conference tournament.
Middle Tennessee features two of the top offensive players in the league, including 2018 C-USA Offensive Player of the Year Peyton DePriest. The game will also be live streamed on CUSA.tv.
